This was a project to design a concept for the YSJ SU awards ceremony. I am proud to see that my concepts are reused the following years as well!

At the end of March my Students' Union will host an award ceremony for the societies, clubs and the Students' Union. I was given the opportunity to design a concept which would represent this fun, celebratory and rewarding event. This project was for members of York St John University, including members of the university's societies and clubs.

I began this project by making a mind-map which would symbolise an award ceremony appropriately. There needed to be three different colour outcomes to represent the SU, societies, and clubs. I researched red carpet event posters, textures, and award icons such as trophies and formal wear.

I believed that a trophy would be too cliche for a young adult audience, so I explored using a banner or a laurel (which traditionally symbolises awards). I then developed a range of layouts to determine which design would look the most balanced and appealing.

I decided to make a simple gradient background with added texture. The overall outcome is in a regal 1920s style, which appeals to a young adult audience. The second part of this project, Farewell Fest, involved designing a logo to commemorate everyone's achievements before Easter. This project taught me how to use existing concepts and to reinvent a company. The awards ceremony are a notable and prestigious event and my concept needed to reflect these guidelines with a modern twist.
After finding a range of poster inspiration, I created a variety of textures which could be used on the final design. While some look aesthetically appealing, I had to make several outcomes and the file size would grow too large.
