Black History Month is a time to celebrate black culture, heritage and diversity. As the Graphic Designer for my Students' Union I was asked to design a campaign concept which represented this important month.
I started this project by looking into existing posters and patterns, as well as the inspiration the Student Union provided me with. I also selected a variety of styles which would look appealing on a campaign poster. The images are sourced from Google which is the source of inspiration my client used for each project.
To begin idea generation I imitated and explored a few styles to understand how to apply my own style for this project. This would make the campaign unique to the YSJ SU and successfully represent the black community at the university.
Once I was comfortable with the sketches, I mocked them up on Illustrator. I specifically researched variations of black skin tones to make sure that members of the black community felt represented. Once the illustrations were designed I mocked them up to be used as social media posts.
This is an illustration of a blog header I designed as part of this project. I researched a variety of black hairstyles to adhere to the cultural and representative aspects of this brief. This project taught me how to consider an appropriate design style which appealed to members of a certain community.
